The Tale of a Perfect Brother
This is my brother Daring. He is literally perfect. He was born first; he gets all the attention; all he has to do is smile and girls throw themselves at him. Sometimes I ask myself why I can't be Daring instead. I get to thinking about what my life would be like without him, but as awesome as it would be to be #1 in everything and to have my dad's praise, I know there'd be an empty hole in my heart. Daring may be selfish, arrogant, egotistical and a narcissist, but he has a good heart. I know he cares about me, and I care about him, too. After all, he is the perfect Prince Charming; I can't help but look up to him... and because he's taller than me.

Character Information

Name: Dexterous "Dexter" Charming
Fandom: Ever After High
Canonpoint: Truth or Hair
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Physical Description: [1] [2]

History: In the world of Ever After, children of famous fairy tale characters attend a school called Ever After High, a school meant to prepare students to fulfill their destinies of reliving the fairy tale their parents came from. The students are all the sons and daughters of famous storybook characters like Snow White and Cinderella or characters based on mythology like the adopted daughter of Eros. Dexter is one of these students and is one of the sons of King Charming and his wife Queen Charming, younger brother to Daring and older twin brother to Darling. Luckily, although his family is full of Charmings, few of them are actually related to one another.

The school is split into two social groups: Royals, who do their best to follow their destiny to become the next whatever their parents were, and Rebels, who'd rather decide their own destiny instead of walking in their parents' footsteps. Because of this, Royals tend to be the hero of their story while the Rebels tend to be the villain who loses to the heroic Royal. However, that's not always the case—there are some Royals who are destined to live out a tragic ending, like the story of Swan Lake.

Although students are given a choice to be a Royal or Rebel, there is an unspoken rule that they be a Royal and fulfill their pre-destined roles in their stories. So for example, Dexter is a Royal not through his own volition, but rather out of responsibility for upholding tradition.

The main goal of the students at Ever After High is to sign the Storybook of Legends. Doing so will lock them into the fairy tale they're destined to relive. Typically, the firstborn child of a fairy tale couple is given the right to sign the Storybook of Legends. Any other children don't have defined destinies of their own. Even so, these are just assumed roles; there's no guarantee that the eldest child will always be destined to relive one of their parents' stories.

The school wants to make sure its students are ready to tackle their responsibilities of being Kings, Queens and Evil Villains, so both Royals and Rebels are required to take classes that will help them such as Advanced Wooing and/or Dragonslaying for Royals and Kingdom Mismanagement and/or History of Evil Spells for Rebels. Because there is no specific rule in place that Royals and Rebels are only allowed to take classes of the destiny they are following, sometimes the students take classes from the other "side." In addition, a student's first year at Ever After High is called "Freedom Year" where they are able to take any classes that interest them. Then, after allowing the student a taste of freedom, it's snatched away during their second year, "Legacy Year," during which they're expected to take the "proper" classes.

Dexter's part in all this is fairly unimportant compared to the role of not just his brother, but the entire Charming Family. During breaks, Dexter's huge family gets together to do stereotypical Prince/King and Princess/Queen things. While his family succeeds at getting treasure guarded by beasts and conquering everything ever, Dexter ends up being a wallflower, sometimes with the company of actual wallflowers. While Daring is off acing Advanced Wooing and being bored to tears with Dragonslaying, Dexter is typically in the shadow his older brother casts. A lot of his free time is spent with technology or helping Blondie Locks, the daughter of Goldilocks, stream a daily news coverage by serving as her cameraman. When technology breaks down, Dexter's often the one people turn to.

When Raven who kicks off the plot of Ever After High by refusing the sign the Storybook of Legends, Dexter becomes a bit more involved in the story. What might appear to be a simple act of rebellion by not signing the Storybook was actually a potential suicide. The entire inhabitants of Ever After are storybook characters and they exist because their stories are retold. By not signing the Storybook of Legends, Raven was accepting the fact that her story could cease to exist, which would doom not only her, but everyone else involved in her generation's retelling of Snow White as well.

But Raven didn't disappear like the headmaster had threatened, and this sparked a little flame of hope in Dexter. He admired Raven's admittedly reckless courage to question the way things were at Ever After High and the fact that she followed her heart and didn't sign the Storybook of Legends. It made him wonder if people had to follow their destiny, especially if people wanted something else in life. It was also Raven's refusal to sign that made Dexter take a bigger interest in Raven in the first place. After her refusal to sign, Dexter spends a lot of time pining after Raven, despite it being a potentially terrible idea since he doesn't know which prince he's destined to be.

Previous Game History: N/A

Personality: Dexter has a raging case of Middle Child Syndrome. His older brother is literally perfect and the very definition of the word "charming." So charming that most people see straight through Daring's flaws and only see the enchanting smile and handsome blue eyes. Girls fall for his brother left and right, sometimes literally, even though he's supposed to marry Apple White someday. His twin sister Darling is noble and strong, and if there's something that needs to be done, heroic or not, she'll find a way to do it. Despite the fact she is most likely destined to be a damsel in distress, she is willing to forge her own post.

Meanwhile, Dexter's just... dexterous, and it leaves him feeling bitter sometimes. Even as children, Daring was better at everything. He could run faster; he could climb towers faster; he could slay a dragon, probably even blindfolded. He could swordfight with his feet... and win. Plus, being nine months older meant that Daring was also heir to the throne and more or less had his destiny as Snow White's prince secured. Probably. To make matters worse, King Charming was so enamored with his first born son that whenever Dexter would ask his father for attention, the response he got was "Go watch your sister." Growing up, during the few times Daring actually made a mistake, their father offered Daring gentle, kind words of encouragement. If Dexter made a mistake, he was blamed for "making Daring look bad." But when Dexter did well? It was all thanks to Daring, who apparently made Dexter "look good." While their father took Daring to socialize with princesses and get real-life experience being a future king, Dexter was left behind to babysit his twin sister Darling, even though she didn't need it and was actually more princely than he could ever hope to be. Growing up with a family like that on top of being expected to be a perfect Prince Charming pretty much tore his self-esteem to shreds.

Dexter didn't just accept his fate, though. He was proactive and read every book he could get his hands on in the castle. Sure, maybe Daring was perfect, but Dexter would rather be second place than last place. All that reading made him fairly book smart, but second-hand experience could never compete with real world experience.

The time he spent babysitting Darling also helped him bond with her. She understood Dexter's plight, sort of. Being a girl in the Charming family meant she was destined to be a Queen Charming someday, but that wasn't the kind of life she wanted to lead. She wanted to be heroic; to pick up a sword and save lives, not sit on a cushy throne and boss people around. So she understood why Dexter wanted in on the action, too. They shared all of their secrets with each other with the promise that neither one of them would tell. For Darling, it meant she had someone to tell about all of her adventures she had in secret. For Dexter, it meant he had someone to vent to whenever he couldn't measure up to the Charming family name.

While Dexter always gets on fantastically with Darling, he still manages to get along pretty well with Daring. Sure, Dexter may be green with envy sometimes, but he still loves Daring. They're family and they have to look out for each other. He doesn't actually dislike Daring because he knows that through the act of magic or destiny or whatever it is that makes his brother perfect, the qualities Daring has are his own. Daring is naturally the perfect Prince Charming without even exerting any effort. Dexter's only jealous because he's always second place to their father. The way their father treats Daring like a flawless human being while picking at every flaw Dexter has makes him feel incredibly self-conscious about himself to the point where his mental catchphrase is "Why can't I be Daring?"

Dexter longs for his father's approval so badly that it bleeds into his life at school, where he plays the part of a Royal. Although he pretends to be a Royal through and through, Dexter actually doesn't mind hanging out with the Rebels, even before Raven refused to sign the Storybook of Legends. However, he doesn't act like a Royal because he wants to; in truth, his heart lies on the Rebels' side of the conflict. However, because his family is so large and full of so many Charmings who have always played the part of the hero, Dexter feels he must do the same to earn the love of his parents. He fears that he will lose his parents' love and respect if he follows his heart instead of whatever his destiny may be. Because of this, no matter how much he thinks matters of the heart can't be written in the script a person's destiny is tied to, he can't bring himself to publicly side with the Rebels when people are paying attention to him. No matter how much he thinks the Rebels have every right to make their own stories, choose their own destinies and have their own Happily Ever Afters, he knows how much disappointment taking the side of the Rebels would bring to his parents. So he half-heartedly goes along with the Royals whenever in the public eye.

His act as a Royal also complicates his feelings for Raven. She's a Rebel by choice, being the future Evil Queen and all, and dating a Rebel is a big no-no for a Royal. He gets comfort knowing that there are brave people who defy the norms and date someone they either aren't destined to marry or date someone from the other social group. Although it's comforting, in a way, it's also depressing because he knows he doesn't have the guts to ask Raven out, not when his father would be so utterly disappointed in him. Again. But when their Stories are all up in the air after Raven's refusal to sign the Storybook of Legends, Royal and Rebel status doesn't matter as much anymore and he takes the opportunity to try to ask her out despite the potential consequences. Key word: try.

Although Dexter is a Charming, he's far from... well, charming. He can't pull off a perfect charming smile to save his life, nor can he ever get out the right words to magically woo anyone. Time and time again, something always gets in the way of Dexter confessing to Raven. He's either too shy, or gets tongue tied, or his gift is ruined, almost like fate is taunting him and reminding him that it's wrong. A real Charming would swoop the girl right off her feet and carry her off to her Happily Ever After; Dexter can't even climb a stairway without stumbling. Despite his shortcomings as a romancer, he and Raven hit it off enough to become good friends. They're able to confide in each other, and Dexter is able to confess to her that knowing there's an unknown destiny waiting for him out there makes him feel uneasy; there's no way for him to prepare for it. Raven may be destined to be the Evil Queen who poisons Snow White, but at least he knows what she's supposed to do; he doesn't. And yet, it's practically guaranteed that no matter what Dexter's story is, it will be good. Raven, were she to follow her story, would be a terrible villain who would hurt all of her friends for power she wasn't even interested in.

Despite what Dexter would have people believe, he does have a lot of good qualities, though his family and his low self-esteem make it difficult for him to see. He's actually pretty good at a lot of things the typical Prince Charming is expected to do, just never as good as Daring. When he's able to just do it without thinking, like when he's having fun playing a game, he's great. It's when he knows people are actively comparing him to his brother that he crumbles. All of his reading has made him have a logical side, and he often wields logic as a weapon instead of a sword. He tends to help people out of the kindness of his heart, rather than because it's expected of him as a Prince Charming. He's even kind to magical creatures and half-breeds when it's not necessary. When faced with hopeless situations, he doesn't run away. Instead, he faces them head-on and approaches them coolly with a level head and an unbreakable will to succeed, at least when his family isn't involved. When his family is involved, he's quick to give up. After all, there are dozens of Charmings. Surely one of them will be able to save the day.

Even though he's not as perfect and heroic as Daring or as brave and strong of heart as Darling, that's what makes him Dexter. If he could understand that it was okay to be Dexter—and not perfect like Daring or as steadfast as Darling—he would be a more confident, happier person.

Abilities: He only has one real ability, and that's an Enchanted Gaze. It's essentially your stereotypical gaze in storybooks where the ~handsome prince~ looks at someone and they swoon and possibly even faint. However, Dexter's gaze must be immediate, so that means it doesn't work when he's wearing his glasses. Since he's incredibly near-sighted, that's a rare thing. Besides, he doesn't even know he has the ability. Even if he did, he'd probably be a little uncomfortable using it on purpose.

Character Information
First Person Sample: [Dear Player]
Third Person Sample: Dexter had been hoping that with how frighteningly normal this place seemed with its boring uniforms and dull lockers that the school would have some logic to it—that exiting the school would just mean heading out the front doors and marching off in the direction of home... wherever home was from this place. But the doors were firmly shut and locked tight. No matter how hard he tugged at them during lunch period, they refused to open. How embarrassing. A prince so weak he couldn't even open a door. He thought for a moment that maybe there was just a magical spell cast on it to keep it shut, but... was magic this weird really possible?

It was if all of the faculty here, and even some of the students, had been hit with a powerful Babble Spell that went way beyond simply speaking Riddlish. They certainly weren't going to help him, and it didn't seem like they actually wanted to help, anyway. With a sigh, Dexter folded his arms and walked away from the front doors. His notebook was pinned between his arm and his side, the pencil behind his ear. New plan. His father once told him and his brother that when a princess is trapped in a building with a library, the way to break out can often be found inside the library. Typical Villain Mistake #57. Or some... number.

"It's okay," he told himself reassuringly. Well, he tried to sound reassuring, but his voice cracked. "There's a way out. There is always a way out. You just have to think and look for it." Keeping his arms folded tightly so he wouldn't be tempted to nervously wring his hands and so he wouldn't lose his notebook, Dexter eventually came across a door. He looked at the label for the room, feeling a little uneasy that he somehow knew "図書館" meant "library." It was definitely writing he'd never seen before, but the meaning was still clear to him. Okay, there was definitely some magic going on here.

After a deep breath, Dexter pushed his hands against the library door. Despite his experience with the front doors, he found himself surprised that the door wouldn't open. He pulled instead, but the door wouldn't budge. "Oh, gort. Come on!" With a frown, Dexter pressed the palms of his hands flat against the library door, looking for some kind of secret. Anything would suffice at this point.

"Abracadabra," he whispered, hoping magic words would work. "Open sesame. Please." If the door had any secrets, it certainly wasn't going to share any with Dexter.

Running out of options, he considered the fact that maybe this time the solution would be simple, so he knocked a few times and pressed his ear against the door to see if anyone was moving around on the other side. "Hello?" he offered the door timidly. Then he heard it, heard breathing, and he used the door as leverage to propel himself away from the library. Of course, as unprincely as he was, he tumbled right over, his notebook and pencil skidding away from him.

Was it cowardly to admit he was a little scared? Or incredibly scared? Because if so, then he was definitely a coward, which was definitely not a Charming trait. He knew there had to be a way out of here, that there had to be something logical about this place. Maybe if he practiced a little cartography on his notebook and then... and then what? This was beginning to feel like a little too much. He'd take a dragon over being trapped in a haunted school with breathing doors any day. At least with a dragon, he might stand a chance... maybe. Still, even if he was afraid, there was no way he was giving up. He'd find a way out and rescue anyone who needed rescuing. He had to.
